Turning Local Roots into Global Impact
Multi-platinum singer The Weeknd gives back to Scarborough hospitals during the pandemic and beyond.

Multi-platinum singer, songwriter, and record producer Abel Tesfaye—better known as The Weeknd—has never forgotten his Scarborough roots.

In 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, The Weeknd donated $500,000 to Scarborough Health Network (SHN) through proceeds from his XO face mask line, personally matching every dollar raised. The gift supported SHN’s COVID-19 Emergency Fund, helping to equip frontline staff with vital resources like ventilators, ICU beds, and PPE.

“I was raised in Scarborough and felt it was important to give back to the community that raised me during the hard times of the pandemic,” said Tesfaye.

His support not only provided essential equipment but also boosted morale among SHN’s courageous healthcare teams.

“Like The Weeknd, many of my fellow frontline workers either come from Scarborough or call this community home,” said Dr. Elaine Yeung, Corporate Chief and Medical Director, Medicine. “It is amazing to see one of our own on the world stage, giving back during our community’s time of need.”

Since then, The Weeknd has continued to shine as both a creative powerhouse and global philanthropist.

On July 27, 2025 during his After Hours til Dawn Tour, The Weeknd returned home to kick-off four sold-out shows at Toronto’s Rogers Centre. Speaking to the crowd, he said, “Who knew a kid from Scarborough could do this.” He also reflected on memories of coming to the Rogers Centre to watch Blue Jays games, making the hometown shows especially meaningful.

In recognition of his global success and remarkable generosity, Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow presented him with the Key to the City, honouring his commitment to giving back to Scarborough hospitals and other local charities.

As Scarborough continues to grow, The Weeknd stands as a powerful example of how one voice, and one act of generosity, can help uplift an entire community.

“I was raised in Scarborough and felt it was important to give back to the community that raised me during the hard times of the pandemic.”
