About Our Hospitals

Scarborough Health Network (SHN) is proud to deliver exceptional, inclusive healthcare across three full-service hospitals: General, Birchmount, and Centenary. Together, they serve a growing community of over 850,000 residents, offering world-class care close to home.

Formed in 2016, SHN was created through the merger of The Scarborough Hospital (General and Grace/Birchmount sites) and Rouge Valley Health System's Centenary site. Originally named Scarborough and Rouge Hospital, the organization was renamed Scarborough Health Network (SHN) in 2018.

Our hospitals are more than just buildings — they are pillars of care, innovation, and equity for one of Canada's most diverse communities.

Scarborough General Hospital

Opened in 1956

Formerly part of: The Scarborough Hospital (General site)

As Scarborough’s oldest and largest hospital, General is a major teaching site and home to the Deepa & Narinder Lal Emergency Department, state-of-the-art surgical suites, and the Northpine Diagnostic Imaging Department. It’s where innovation meets compassionate, community-based care.

Centenary Hospital

Opened in 1967

Formerly part of: Rouge Valley Health System (Centenary site)

Named in honour of Canada’s 100th anniversary, Centenary is now a critical part of SHN’s regional cardiac and spine care programs. It also houses surgical care, mental health services, and high-volume outpatient clinics.

Birchmount Hospital

Opened in 1984

Formerly: Scarborough Grace Hospital

Located in the heart of Agincourt, Birchmount Hospital plays a central role in maternal and newborn care, as well as mental health services, surgery, and emergency care. Its community roots run deep, and its future is focused on innovation and expansion.
