Building the new Birchmount Hospital
Birchmount’s healthcare teams are delivering exceptional care. But they’re doing it in a hospital built more than 40 years ago, where aging spaces are struggling to keep up with rising demand for care.
Now, SHN is preparing for the largest redevelopment in its history: a new Birchmount Hospital with expanded emergency, surgical, inpatient and critical care in addition to clinical support spaces.

Transforming Birchmount Hospital
Birchmount Hospital is undergoing a major transformation to expand capacity, modernize spaces and enhance care across the hospital.
At the heart of this transformation is a new patient tower featuring:
- New private patient rooms
- New operating suites designed for today’s advanced technology
- A larger ICU, triple its current size
- A new, expanded Emergency Department designed around SHN’s AcceleratED Care model
- New diagnostic imaging, lab and pharmacy spaces
And the transformation is already beginning. Ahead of the new tower, enhanced mental health and stroke care spaces will open within the existing Birchmount Hospital.

“Modern surgical suites and updated imaging technology will significantly enhance our ability to deliver timely, high-quality ophthalmic care. These improvements will allow us to serve more patients efficiently and with the most advanced equipment available.”
Dr. Ying Lu Chief of Ophthalmology
