Support Cardiac Care at SHN

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in Ontario — and it’s rising fast. Scarborough Health Network’s Centenary Hospital is home to the designated Cardiac Centre for the Scarborough–Durham region, treating over 40,000 cardiac patients each year and operating Ontario’s second-largest STEMI program for heart attack response.

But our Coronary Care Unit (CCU) is outdated, overcrowded, and no longer fit for purpose — placing vulnerable patients and care teams at risk.

With your support, we can expand and transform our CCU into a modern, state-of-the-art space that meets the complex and growing needs of critical cardiac care.

Imagine what we could do with more.

Our care teams overcome incredible obstacles every day. But they need the right spaces and tools to match their expertise — and your support can make that possible.

Redeveloping the Coronary Care Unit

Our CCU is the heart of SHN’s cardiac program — it provides 24/7 care to the region’s sickest heart patients. But since being relocated during the pandemic, it no longer meets the critical care needs of today.

We are now planning a major redevelopment and expansion:

  • Expanding from 10 to 16 private, single-bed rooms
  • Ensuring clear sightlines for nurses to monitor patients at all times
  • Adding a dedicated procedure room for immediate, life-saving intervention
  • Creating more space around beds for equipment and cardiac technology

This transformation will help us:

  • Care for more patients
  • Improve privacy and infection control
  • Support our doctors and nurses
  • Save more lives

Excellence in Cardiac Care

SHN is proud to be a national leader in cardiac innovation. Here are just a few milestones that set our team apart:

  • STEMI Fast-Track: Patients from across the region are brought directly to our Cath Labs within 90 minutes — the gold standard in heart attack care.
  • Cryoballoon Ablation: We’re Canada’s largest trial site for this innovative treatment for irregular heartbeats.
  • Cardio-Oncology Centre of Excellence: One of only two in Ontario, and the only one in Toronto.
  • Non-Invasive CTO Program: Treating chronic artery blockages without open-heart surgery.
  • High-Definition Imaging Trials: The first hospital in Canada to trial the HDi device for sharper, more precise cardiac diagnostics.
  • Structural Heart Disease Clinic: In partnership with Sunnybrook, bringing valve repair procedures closer to home.
