Scarborough has been more than just a place to live—it’s a community that has shaped my identity, values, and career. I came here with my family in 1995, and from my first job at Scarborough Town Centre to buying my first home, every step reinforced my connection to this area. Scarborough isn’t just where I grew up; it’s a part of who I am.
Over the years, Scarborough Health Network (SHN) has been an anchor for my family. My parents, sister, grandparents, and I have found care, compassion, and healing within SHN’s walls. It feels like home because we know we’re in the hands of dedicated professionals who genuinely care.
I began my social work career at SHN as a Master of Social Work student at General Hospital. That placement ignited my passion for compassionate care, leading to a fulfilling career at SHN, where I’ve worked for 13 years. I recently transitioned to my current role as Planner for Mental Health, Addictions, and Oncology programs. This role places me at the forefront of consolidating inpatient units at Birchmount Hospital to improve care delivery for our community.
One of our biggest challenges is securing funding to provide Scarborough residents with the excellent care they deserve. The Love, Scarborough campaign is crucial for advocating for these resources. Through this work, I aim to help establish a true centre of excellence right here in Scarborough.
My Filipino heritage is an important part of my identity. As Chair of SHN’s Filipino Community of Inclusion, I support a community that represents a large portion of Scarborough’s diversity. Tagalog is the second most spoken language at SHN after English, and having a dedicated community of inclusion brings visibility, unity, and understanding for our staff.
By sharing my story, I hope to inspire others to support SHN. Donating to SHN means investing in a place that has cared for my family, my community, and countless Scarborough residents. Together, we can build a stronger, healthier future.

For 18 months, Shabana and Adriana visited SHN weekly for chemotherapy. “The incredible doctors and staff became part of our family,” says Shabana. “Nurse Lynn and Nurse Practitioner Kirsty didn’t just treat Adriana’s medical needs—they comforted and encouraged us. Her tumour shrank, and hospital visits became something she looked forward to.”
Shabana expresses hope for the future: “Adriana’s journey is far from over, but the care at SHN has given us renewed faith. My holiday wish is simple: I want every family in Scarborough to have access to the exceptional care that has made such a difference in Adriana’s life.”
