Scarborough Health Network (SHN) physicians are going beyond caring for patients by investing in the future of the hospitals where they work.  

Since launching the Physicians' Campaign in 2022, 177 physicians have helped raise more than $2 million in support of the Love, Scarborough campaign. Now they have their sights set on the next $1 million.

As the Physicians' Campaign enters its next phase, Dr. Raymond Chan, Cardiologist, will continue as Co-Chair, joined by Dr. Alexis Gordon, Chief of Medicine, and Dr. John You, Chief of Vascular Surgery and SHN Foundation Board member.  

For Dr. Chan, continuing his involvement is deeply personal, rooted in his connection to both SHN and the community he serves. "Scarborough is where I work, where many of my patients live, and where my own journey in Canada began as an immigrant. This community has played an important role in my life, and it is a privilege to give back and support it in any way I can."

For Dr. Gordon, supporting the Physicians' Campaign is a natural extension of the care physicians provide every day. "As high users of the hospital, we have a lot of skin in the game to make sure we're doing our best by our patients, and part of that is standing behind the hospital where we're doing the work."

Together, they will help drive the campaign forward, supporting some of the most significant investments in SHN’s history, including the new Research and Education Centre, which will help attract and train the next generation of healthcare professionals; the new Birchmount Hospital, which will nearly double inpatient capacity; and the redevelopment of Centenary Hospital’s Northpine Emergency Department, where work is now officially underway to create a larger, modernized space for emergency care.

Dr. You says contributing to the campaign is another way physicians can advocate for their patients beyond the bedside.

"Part of the work we do in treating our patients is also advocating for them," he says. "We have to set the example by saying, 'I believe enough in my hospital that I'm going to put my money where my mouth is.'"

Physician support is helping transform care across SHN by funding new equipment, technology, and spaces, including the Northpine Diagnostic Imaging Department, the new SHN Community Mental Health Centre, and the VELYS surgical robot.

The success of the Physicians' Campaign has been built on the leadership of physicians across SHN. Following Love, Scarborough's historic $200 million fundraising milestone in 2025, SHN physicians are once again stepping forward to help shape what's next.
