More than 100 individuals from the Jaffna University Alumni Association – Canada (JUAA–Canada) turned a walk-a-thon into a powerful show of community action — raising $11,000 for Scarborough hospitals and exceeding their original $10,000 goal.
JUAA–Canada is made up of Tamil professionals and families who studied at the University of Jaffna in northern Sri Lanka and have since made Canada home. “As an alumni association rooted in service and compassion, we’ve always looked for ways to give back,” said JUAA–Canada spokesperson Jebaranjan Nadarajah. “Scarborough hospitals care for many in our Tamil-Canadian community — including our members, friends, and family. Supporting SHN was a natural choice.”
Held on June 29 at Thomson Memorial Park, the event blended community spirit with purpose, starting with food, music, and kids’ activities before culminating in an hour-long charity walk. “Seeing families, students, seniors, and professionals walk side by side reminded us of what our community can accomplish when united,” Jebaranjan reflected. “There was joy in every step and deep pride in knowing that we were contributing to something greater than ourselves.”
The funds raised will support hospital programs, medical equipment, and patient care across SHN’s network. “Reaching that $11K milestone filled us with pride and gratitude,” he added. “It’s a powerful reminder of what’s possible when a community rallies together.”
Scarborough is home to one of the largest Tamil communities in Toronto, with an estimated 45,000 Tamil residents. JUAA–Canada emphasized the importance of culturally sensitive healthcare. “Language and cultural understanding can be barriers,” said Jebaranjan. “SHN’s commitment to inclusive and respectful care helps ensure everyone feels seen and valued. Supporting SHN is our way of helping strengthen that bridge between healthcare and our community.”
The team used SHN Foundation’s Show Your Love platform to organize the fundraiser and collect donations. “The tools were intuitive and accessible, allowing us to stay focused on bringing people together and supporting a great cause,” he said.
