Strategic Giving
Greer has relied on SHN for decades—from life-saving emergency care to a hip replacement. Now, he gives back through gifts of securities, matching donations, and even naming SHN in his life insurance policy.

Greer Elcombe found a smart way to give back that not only supports SHN but also benefits his investment portfolio. By donating securities—like stocks—Greer avoids capital gains taxes and receives a charitable tax receipt, allowing him to maximize his impact on the hospital he has relied on for decades of care.

Greer’s three children were born at Scarborough General Hospital, marking the start of his family’s deep connection with Scarborough hospitals.

In the late 1970s, he was rushed to SHN after experiencing a grand mal seizure—causing a sudden loss of consciousness and violent muscle contractions. Over the years, his relationship with the hospital continued, including significant surgeries such as a hip replacement in 2020. His numerous interactions with the dedicated medical team at SHN left a lasting impression.

A Legacy of Giving

Greer chose to give back to the place that played such a pivotal role in his life. He became a dedicated donor, making significant contributions to Scarborough hospitals. His approach to giving is both strategic and heartfelt, reflecting his desire to ensure the hospital remains a vital resource for future generations.

His generosity goes beyond one-time donations. Greer has matched donations during SHN’s Giving Tuesday campaigns, doubling the impact of others’ contributions and inspiring the community to rally around the cause. He also gives through gifts of securities—a tax-efficient way to make a significant impact while managing investments wisely. Additionally, he has named SHN as a beneficiary of his life insurance policy, ensuring that his legacy of giving will continue long into the future.

“For me, giving back to Scarborough hospitals is about more than financial contributions—it’s about leaving a lasting legacy with a place that has meant so much to me and my family,” Greer says.

Through his generosity, Greer hopes to inspire others to follow suit and ensure that the hospital remains a cornerstone of care for generations to come.
