“I remember my mother making ladoos and gulab jamun, and my dad once bought our first computer during Diwali in the ’90s, it was the best gift ever!” recalls Biswajit Das.
Biswajit serves on SHN Foundation’s Lights & Luck Committee. Held on Oct. 3, the inaugural Lights & Luck gala was a celebration of the Festival of Lights, bringing together Scarborough’s vibrant South Asian community all in support of Scarborough hospitals.
For Biswajit, these cherished memories and moments of giving perfectly capture the spirit of Diwali, a festival that celebrates light, hope, and togetherness.
“What I love about Diwali is that it symbolizes the triumph of good over evil, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair,” he shares. “It’s a time for inner reflection, prayer, and reconnecting with our spiritual values. It’s also when our communities showcase their culture and pass down traditions to younger generations.”
For him, Diwali is a time for family and connection. “It’s when families come together, share meals, exchange gifts, and build memories filled with laughter, sweets, and fireworks,” he says. “Lighting diyas is an important ritual for me, it’s a way of symbolizing the victory of good over evil.”

Diwali is also a time of renewal. “Homes are cleaned, debts are settled, and new ventures are launched. It teaches us that no matter how challenging the past has been, there’s always an opportunity to reset, refocus, and move forward with optimism.”
Biswajit’s involvement with SHN Foundation was inspired by a personal connection. “Scarborough General Hospital helped my family when we needed them most. At an SHN Innovation Dinner, Shalini Sheth asked if I’d like to help bring the Lights & Luck gala to life. Without hesitation, I said yes. It’s been an incredibly fulfilling journey.”
He adds, “Generosity is a core part of Diwali, not just in material terms but in spirit. It’s a time to give back, to donate, to help others, and to spread light in our community.”
Diwali is here, and the Festival of Lights reminds us to illuminate the world with kindness and hope. We at SHN Foundation are grateful for community leaders like Biswajit Das, whose light continues to inspire others to give, connect, and celebrate the joy of helping others. Wishing you a bright and joyful Diwali!
