“I’ve had five surgeries at Scarborough General Hospital,” says Sharon Green. “Everything from a hysterectomy to two-foot surgeries, and through it all, the care has been wonderful. The staff are always kind, compassionate, and professional.” Sharon has lived in Scarborough for most of her adult life, and her connection to local healthcare goes even further: her daughter was born at Centenary Hospital, and over the years she has come to rely on SHN for world-class care.
That care inspired Sharon to give back in every way she could. Not only is she a patient, but she’s also a dedicated monthly donor, a frequent visitor to the hospital gift shop, and now, a legacy donor who has included Scarborough Health Network (SHN) Foundation in her Will.
“When I found out years ago that hospitals have to buy their own equipment, I couldn’t believe it,” she recalls. “I thought the government provided everything. That’s when I realized how important it is for the community to step up and support our hospitals.”
With no grandchildren of her own, Sharon decided to leave a lasting legacy to ensure that SHN can continue caring for future generations. “It’s not just for me,” she says. “It’s to keep the hospitals going. If a person can afford it, money is the easiest thing to give – and it truly makes a difference.”
Earlier this year, when the Ontario government mailed $200 cost-of-living rebate cheques to residents, Sharon didn’t hesitate to donate hers back to SHN. “I knew it would be put to good use,” she says simply.
This November, as we mark Make a Will Month, Sharon’s story is a powerful reminder that legacy giving can shape the future of healthcare in Scarborough. Every gift – no matter the size – helps ensure that SHN continues providing compassionate, world-class care for generations to come.
