Reppin’ Scarborough: Nicholas Lewis’ Journey to Pro Basketball Star
Scarborough-born guard Nicholas Lewis has taken his game worldwide, but his heart remains with his hometown and its hospitals.

As a professional basketball player and former guard for the Scarborough Shooting Stars during the 24-25 season, I carry my hometown pride everywhere I go. Having spent over a decade playing overseas, currently with Manchester Basketball Club in the British Super League Basketball, I’ve experienced different cultures and levels of competition, but no matter where the game takes me, I’m always repping Scarborough.

Born at Scarborough Grace Hospital—now SHN’s Birchmount Hospital—I’ve called Scarborough home my entire life. By the time I was 17, I had lived in 12 different communities throughout the east end area. Growing up here taught me resilience, adaptability, and the power of community support. Basketball has always been my passion. My journey started playing on the Scarborough Blues, a non-profit basketball organization for boys and girls. It taught me never to give up and to follow my dreams. From playing on the Canadian National team, to becoming a 10+ year professional playing basketball all over the world, Scarborough has given me the strength to push through challenges and work hard for what I believe in.

The year I left home, I got “Scarborough” tattooed across my back. That tattoo is more than just ink; it’s a reflection of my journey and a tribute to the roots that shaped me. Despite spending years playing pro ball overseas, Scarborough remains my foundation, and I cherish the time I got to play in my hometown with the Scarborough Shooting Stars. The grit and loyalty I learned here are part of my identity, which is why I proudly support the Love, Scarborough campaign.

Scarborough is filled with talent, ambition, and determination. Our community works hard and achieves amazing things, and it’s vital that our hospitals reflect the strength of the people they serve. By supporting the Love, Scarborough campaign, you can help bring attention to the incredible spirit of this community and address the healthcare inequities we face. Together, we can ensure that our healthcare system lives up to the excellence and resilience that define Scarborough. Let’s come together and make a difference!

“Scarborough gave me the resilience to push through challenges and the strength to chase my dreams. No matter where basketball takes me, Scarborough is always my foundation.”

For 18 months, Shabana and Adriana visited SHN weekly for chemotherapy. “The incredible doctors and staff became part of our family,” says Shabana. “Nurse Lynn and Nurse Practitioner Kirsty didn’t just treat Adriana’s medical needs—they comforted and encouraged us. Her tumour shrank, and hospital visits became something she looked forward to.”

Shabana expresses hope for the future: “Adriana’s journey is far from over, but the care at SHN has given us renewed faith. My holiday wish is simple: I want every family in Scarborough to have access to the exceptional care that has made such a difference in Adriana’s life.”
