Research & Education at SHN
Scarborough faces a critical shortage of family doctors, but together we can change that. Over 100,000 people in Scarborough don’t have a family doctor.
SHN is working to address this challenge by building the Scarborough Health Centre of Excellence, a new hub for healthcare education, research, and primary care.
This is more than a building. It’s a bold, community-rooted solution to a growing healthcare crisis.

It’s designed to keep students in Scarborough and to keep doctors here after they graduate.
“This is how we will ensure Scarborough has the same access to healthcare, research, and clinical trials as the rest of Toronto.”
Dr. Samir Grover, EVP, Education & Research Chair
A Home for Healthcare Innovation
SHN is proud to be a clinical partner for the University of Toronto’s new Scarborough Academy of Medicine and Integrated Health (SAMIH).
Located steps from Centenary Hospital, the new Centre of Excellence will be a training ground for doctors, nurses, and healthcare leaders — built in Scarborough, for Scarborough.
This will be SHN’s first-ever facility dedicated to education, research, and hands-on training. It will feature:
- A Family Medicine Teaching Unit
- Simulation labs and exam rooms
- Flexible learning spaces
- Research labs for innovation in primary care
