The Challenge

SHN’s three emergency departments see over 176,000 visits each year in spaces built for less than half. Centenary Hospital’s emergency room has had no major infrastructure upgrades in over 50 years, impacting the patient experience and creating obstacles for our frontline healthcare teams.

Your Impact

Rendering of the new Northpine Emergency Department at SHN’s Centenary Hospital

With donor support, SHN will build Canada’s Emergency Department built with a “front-end” model of care at Centenary Hospital. This innovative model of care will reduce wait times by 90%, significantly reducing the time it takes to see a doctor during a frightening and scary time.

The new Northpine Emergency Department will feature specialized care zones to provide compassionate, specialized treatment. These include a mental health zone for those experiencing a mental health crisis, an acute care zone for those with critical injuries, and a child-friendly space for our smallest patients.

The new model will also be implemented at the General and Birchmount hospitals, reducing wait times across the entire health network.

This priority project is set to get underway in 2024, and will demonstrate the collective impact you, our supporters, can make on healthcare in Scarborough.
