In a moving tribute to loving parents and grandparents Hemkunver and Maganlal, the Sheth family made a generous donation in support of Scarborough Health Network (SHN). Their philanthropic spirit was honoured with a heartfelt plaque unveiling ceremony at SHN’s Birchmount Hospital on April 10, 2024, coinciding with Hemkunver’s birthday.

The event featured a reception, remarks, and a plaque unveiling in the Internal Medicine Unit that cared for the couple. Attending were several members of the Sheth family and leaders from SHN including Dr. Alexis Gordon, Medical Director, Internal Medicine; Dr. Elaine Yeung, Chief of Staff; Dr. Dhun Noria, Medical Director, Laboratory Medicine; and Dr. Jose Guerra, Senior Orthopaedic Surgeon.

Shalini Sheth, an active member of the Foundation’s Board of Directors, and granddaughter, shared a heartfelt story of her grandparents’ legacy and enduring love for each other, their family, and the community. Their partnership helped found and build Surati Sweet Mart, now a leading global food manufacturing company.

“Today we remember the profound impact they had on our lives. Hemkunver, as we fondly called Baa, was not just our grandmother but our rock. Her presence was a source of unwavering strength and boundless love, ” said Shalini.

Reflecting on the compassionate care received at SHN, Shalini continued, “In 2011, when illness struck our dear Baa, it was an immensely challenging time for our family. We were lost. However, the love and care extended to us by SHN was profound. The hospital staff provided the support we desperately needed during those trying moments. For that, we are eternally grateful.”

She further reminisced about Maganlal, known as Dada, whose generosity knew no bounds.

“For his 90th birthday, Dada had a unique request; he wanted a party where guests brought toys instead of gifts. These toys were brought here to Birchmount Hospital, a place he said took such good care of Baa. That was our Dada, always giving back, always with a smile.”

Alicia Vandermeer, President and CEO of the SHN Foundation, praised Shalini and her family’s dedication to Scarborough’s hospitals: “Shalini, your energy is infectious. We are grateful for your leadership and tireless commitment to our Foundation. You and your family are enabling us to dream bigger.”

The funds will support the highest priority needs of the Love, Scarborough fundraising campaign including the purchase of innovative equipment like the VELYS Robot – a state-of-the-art tool that enables precision surgeries for hip and knee replacements.

The campaign aims to transform healthcare in Scarborough by improving programs, creating new spaces, and developing innovative solutions. A key priority is the redevelopment of Birchmount Hospital, which provides dignified and compassionate care to the elderly.

Arlene Boyce, Director of Major Gifts at SHN Foundation, expressed her appreciation for the Sheth family’s efforts: “I feel privileged to witness your family’s kindness, generosity, and dedication to the Scarborough community. Working with you, Haren and Priya, to advance SHN’s great work has been wonderful,”

This generous contribution from the Sheth family significantly enhances healthcare services in Scarborough, ensuring a legacy that impacts countless lives.

“As we unveil this plaque today, let it serve as a symbol of enduring love, cherished memories, and a legacy of kindness and generosity,” said Shalini. “Baa and Dada, though no longer with us, continue to inspire us every day. May their spirits live on in our hearts forever.”
