Michael Luchetta’s journey within the walls of Scarborough Health Network (SHN) spans an impressive 30 years, marking a lifetime of dedication and service. He began his career in housekeeping, and his ambition and commitment quickly propelled him into outpatient care, where he became an endoscopy technician. In this role, he supported doctors and cared for patients.
Dr. Tim Devlin, a gastroenterologist at SHN’s Birchmount Hospital, recalls Michael’s impact: “Michael worked with nurses and endoscopists for many years at Birchmount and was a valued member of our team, always willing to extend a hand with patients and staff. He has a great sense of humour and camaraderie, and we always appreciate his garden produce, fruits, and vegetables!”
But SHN was more than just a place of work for Michael; it became a source of support during some of his most difficult health battles. Over the years, he underwent several major surgeries at SHN, including an aneurysm repair at the General Hospital and a resection at Birchmount Hospital in 2023. “I was always treated very nicely here,” Michael said. “Not just because I worked here, but because the staff truly care.”

Dr. Devlin wasn’t just a colleague; he became Michael’s GI doctor, family physician when he needed him, and lifelong friend. When Michael needed medical advice, Dr. Devlin was always there for him—even arranging care when he had COVID-19.
Their bond was so strong that Michael even gave Dr. Devlin’s son a kitten. The cat, lived for nearly seventeen years, a symbol of their enduring friendship.
“There is no way to express the thanks to him. I’d do anything for him,” says Michael, a sentiment that speaks volumes about the deep gratitude he feels.
Now, through SHN’s With Gratitude program, patients like Michael can express appreciation for the exceptional care they receive by donating in honour of a staff member. Not only does a gift support the incredible work that SHN staff do every day, honourees receive a special lanyard and pin, symbolizing their dedication and impact.
Michael’s journey from Italy to Canada and eventually to Scarborough was one filled with hard work and perseverance. He had built a life, raised a family, and dedicated himself to a hospital that had, in many ways, defined his life. Though he had seen changes over the years, his affection for SHN and Scarborough never wavered.
Simply, “Scarborough is my place,” he said.
