Veronica Javier, MSW, RSW

Planner, Mental Health & Addictions and Oncology

Scarborough has been more than just a place to live for me—it’s been a community that has shaped my identity, values, and career.

I came to Scarborough with my family in 1995, and this vibrant community has influenced my life in countless ways.  From my first job at Scarborough Town Centre to buying my first home here, every step has reinforced my connection to this area. Scarborough isn’t just where I grew up; it’s a part of who I am.

Over the years, Scarborough Health Network (SHN) has been an anchor for my family. My parents, sister and grandparents and I have found care, compassion, and healing within SHN’s walls. It feels like home because, each time we come, we know we’re in the hands of dedicated professionals who genuinely care.

I attended what was then called Jean Vanier Catholic Secondary High School (currently renamed St. Joan of Arc Catholic Academy) and graduated from York University, beginning my social work career as a Master of Social Work student at SHN’s General Hospital. That placement experience ignited my passion for compassionate care, leading to a fulfilling career at SHN, where I’ve worked for 13 years. Recently, I transitioned from the renal program to my current role as the Planner for the Mental Health, Addictions, and Oncology programs. This exciting position puts me at the forefront of our consolidation project, which aims to centralize inpatient units at Birchmount Hospital to improve care delivery in our community.

One of the biggest challenges we face is securing the funding we need to provide Scarborough residents with the excellent care they deserve. The Love, Scarborough campaign is crucial for advocating for these resources. I want to show the world how remarkable Scarborough is and advocate for the resources we need to thrive. Working on these projects is my way of helping establish a true centre of excellence right here in Scarborough.

My Filipino heritage is a significant part of my identity. I’m grateful to be the Chair of SHN’s Filipino Community of Inclusion, where I support a community that represents a large part of Scarborough’s rich diversity. I was amazed to learn that Tagalog is the second most spoken language at SHN after English. For SHN to commit to supporting Filipino staff through a dedicated community of inclusion is deeply meaningful to me. It’s about visibility and unity, bringing together a significant number of Filipino staff members to understand and address the issues that affect us.

By sharing my story, I hope to inspire others to support SHN. Donating to SHN means investing in a place that has cared for my family, my community, and countless individuals who call Scarborough home. Together, we can build a stronger, healthier future for Scarborough residents.
