Greer Elcombe found a smart way to give back that not only supports Scarborough Health Network (SHN) but also benefits his investment portfolio. By donating securities—like stocks—Greer avoids capital gains taxes and receives a charitable tax receipt, allowing him to maximize his impact on the hospital he has relied on for decades of care.
Greer’s three children, were born at Scarborough General Hospital, marking the start of their deep relationship with Scarborough hospitals.

In the late 1970s, he was rushed to SHN after experiencing a grand mal seizure—causing a sudden loss of consciousness and violent muscle contractions.
Over the years, his relationship with the hospital continued, as he underwent significant surgeries, including a hip replacement in 2020. His numerous interactions with the dedicated medical team at SHN, as well as the exceptional care he received, left a lasting impression on Greer.
Greer chose to give back to the place that played such a pivotal role in his life. He became a dedicated donor, making significant contributions to Scarborough hospitals. His approach to giving is strategic and heartfelt, reflecting his desire to ensure the hospital remains a vital resource for future generations.
Greer’s generosity goes beyond one-time donations. He has generously matched donations during SHN’s Giving Tuesday campaigns, doubling the impact of others’ contributions and inspiring the community to rally around the cause. He also gives through gift of securities—a tax-efficient way of making a significant impact while managing his investments wisely. Additionally, Greer has named the SHN as a beneficiary of his life insurance policy, ensuring that his legacy of giving will continue long after he is gone.
For Greer, giving back to Scarborough hospitals is about more than financial contributions—it’s about leaving a lasting legacy with a place that has meant so much to him and his family. Through his generosity, he hopes to inspire others to follow suit and ensure that the hospital remains a cornerstone of care for future generations.
