Facing a serious illness is one of life’s most challenging moments. For many patients, the question isn’t just, “How long do I have?” but “Will I be comfortable? Will I have the care I need?”

Scarborough Health Network (SHN) is leading a significant transformation in end-of-life care at the Bryan and Bette Rowntree Palliative Care Centre.

Dr. Raymond Berry, Palliative Care Physician Lead, is working to implement a first-of-its-kind care model in Ontario that integrates hospital and community-based services.

“We provide a personalized approach, ensuring patients receive care where they feel most comfortable – at home, the hospital, or a hospice,” he says.

The centre will use multidisciplinary teams, including physicians, nurses, social workers, and spiritual care providers, to deliver holistic, tailored support for patients and their families.

Previously, Dr. Berry worked as a consultant at UHN’s Toronto Western and Princess Margaret Hospital and helped lead the development of the palliative care unit at Bickle Centre, Toronto Rehab. He comes to Scarborough with immense expertise and a passion for driving change.

“I came to Scarborough to build a program that meets the growing demand for palliative services,” he says. “With the increasing population and the prevalence of serious illnesses like heart disease, it is vital to offer this level of care closer to home.”

Historically, palliative care in Scarborough was fragmented, leaving many patients and families struggling during tough times. Currently, only 16-30% of Canadians access high-quality palliative care, making the Rowntree Centre crucial for the community, where over 60% will need such services in their lifetime

The centre was established thanks to a generous $5 million donation from Mr. Bryan Rowntree. Dr. Berry emphasizes the importance of community collaboration: “It’s essential that healthcare providers, families, and the community work together. We need community support to meet the growing need.”

On Oct. 12, SHN recognizes World Hospice and Palliative Care Day, celebrating the crucial role of palliative care teams and highlighting the need for compassionate end-of-life care.

As Dr. Berry says, “No matter what, even if your illness is not curable, you will be comfortable and well cared for. Honestly, I love my job because we’re truly improving quality of life.”
